About this work
This work grew from an attempt to move beyond flat composition into surface texture: colour that appears to have been covered, worn away and revealed again. This digital image brings curved fragments close together as if under compression. Red and black form a weighty body, interrupted by an irregular pale fissure. Shifts in light and dark set the pieces at different apparent depths, while a pale rose area gives the denser passages space.
The surface depicts scratching, layering and exposed colour beneath. Broad, quiet dark areas sit beside concentrated marks, inviting the eye to take in the tension of the whole before approaching the worn passages.
